PRINT BY: Francis Nicholson (initials ‘FN’) AFTER/ARTIST: Francis Nicholson PUBLISHER: Hullmandel DATE: 1820 METHOD: Lithograph, with contemporary colour IMAGE SIZE: Oval, approx 8.5 inches by 12.0 inches
NOTES: A very attractive view of the west front of Byland Abbey, with an old cottage and (old) peasants in front, with much vegetation. Not much like today’s sterile surroundings. The Abbey site is managed nowadays by English Heritage. Francis Nicholson is one of the most enduringly popular Yorkshire artists and engravers. This print was printed by the great lithographer, Hullmandel - a dream ticket. For a very interesting review of Nicholson’s adoption of lithography, see Twyman, ‘Lithography 1800 - 1850’, OUP 1970, pp 189 -191. In this section, Twyman states that Nicholson’s earliest lithographs are believed to date from 1820, so this is one of the earliest prints. Lovely soft colour, believed contemporary.
CONDITION: Very good, the image area is perfect. Good sized sheet, on wove paper. There are two tears to the top margin, but well away from the image area.
