NOTES: The Multiangular Tower, York, from Joseph Halfpenny's (1748 - 1811) book, ‘Fragmenta Vetusta’ or ‘The remains of ancient buildings in York’. The lower courses are of Roman origin, with the later medieval City wall built on top. A remarkable survival, still standing. The view is seen much as today, except that there are far more trees. The building off to the left also still stands, the King’s Manor, formerly part of St Mary’s Abbey. Halfpenny was a local York artist, who seems to have spent his life in the City. ‘Fragmenta Vetusta’ contained 33 plates of many of York’s main sites, including a companion interior view of the Tower.
