PRINT BY: George Hawkins AFTER/ARTIST: William Richardson PUBLISHER: Robert Sunter, Stonegate, York, the plates by ‘Day & Haghe, Liths to the Queen’ DATE: 1844 METHOD: Lithograph IMAGE SIZE: 12.75 inches by 20.0 inches image area
NOTES: A print of St Mary’s Abbey, York, from perhaps the most well known series of prints of Yorkshire, ‘The Monastic Ruins of Yorkshire’, with drawings by William Richardson. There were several qualities of print available. This is the uncoloured version, with the architectural and other detail in black, but also printed with a light brown / sepia stone. This gives the image much more depth. Our reproduction if anything shows it with a little less colour than the print itself. Richardson seems to have been born and lived all his life in York (not uncommon to this day!) He is listed as an architect, but apart from this great work, which featured some 60 plates, relatively little seems to be known about him. The original watercolour for this print is in York City Art Gallery.
CONDITION: Good, printed on a heavy card with wide margins. There is some foxing around the margins, but almost none on the image area which is clean and bright.
