NOTES: “A General Prospect of Vaux Hall Gardens, Shewing at one View the disposition of the whole Gardens,” perhaps one of the most interesting views of the Gardens, as it shows the layout of the site , and enables the many detail views to be located. Opened in 1732 by Jonathon Tyers, Vauxhall Gardens was for more or less a century the social venue for London Society for meeting, eating, listening to music . . . and other purposes. The surprisingly plain entrance is to the front, the Chinese pavilion to the left. Also to the left, the conical roof of the Music room can be seen. The orchestra gallery is in the centre. This was later replaced in 1758 by a grander building in the Gothic manner, shown in Rowlandson’s famous print. The large area, extending apparently to some 12 acres, can be appreciated and also the rural nature of the site.
CONDITION: A very good impression.
