PRINT BY: Charles Grignion Sen AFTER/ARTIST: Samuel Wale PUBLISHER: Mountague DATE: c 1770 METHOD: Line engraving IMAGE SIZE: 10.00 by 6.25 inches to platemark
NOTES: ‘Guy Fawkes seized by order of Sir Thomas Knevet’, engraved for William Henry Mountague’s ‘A New and Universal History of England’, published J Cooke, 1771. A topical print illustrating the well known story, and one of a large number of prints prepared after Samuel Wale for this publication. While quite modest prints and probably of dubious historical accuracy, they are nevertheless made attractive and unusual by the extraordinary florid Rococo borders. A picture frame designer somewhere, struggling to get out.
CONDITION: Very good.
