PRINT BY: Wenceslaus Hollar (1607 - 1677) AFTER/ARTIST: Anthony van Dyck PUBLISHER: Joannes Meysens Antwerp DATE: c 1650 (see National Portrait Gallery examples) METHOD: etching IMAGE SIZE: 10.00 inches by 7.25 inches
NOTES: Mary Villiers, Duchess of Lennox and Richmond (1622 - 1685) A charming and very early etching by the great Wenceslaus Hollar, of Mary Duchess of Richmond, called on the print ‘Elisabetha’. Apparently quite a feisty lady, she was the daughter of George Villiers, the 1st Duke of Buckingham. She was married three times, the second time in 1637 to James Stuart, Duke of Richmond.
CONDITION: Reasonably good. The image is strong. The print has been trimmed to the margins. The print has suffered a bit over the years - there is some light foxing to the rear, an old fold across the centre and some expert repairs to the rear, which again do not show to the front.
