WATERLOO WATERMARK

The ‘La Belle Alliance’ print of the Waterloo battlefield has a very nice watermark for J Whatman’s, dated 1814, the famous paper producers. The small sample area has been photographed from the rear with a light shining through it. Richard Hills’ ‘Papermaking in Britain 1488-1988’, The Athlone Press, 1988, has a very useful chapter on Whatmans.
