NOTES: Newcastle House, Lincoln's Inn Fields. This grand London Town House built 1686 as Powis House, sold to the Duke of Newcastle in 1705, still stands in the NW corner of the Fields, just near the Sir John Soane Museum. It was occupied by the Duke of Newcastle, an important politician, until his death in 1768. Thereafter, it had quite a chequered history. The house as seen today was extensively reworked by Sir Edwin Lutyens in the 1930s. From ‘Stowe's London’, this large print from the 6th 1754 Edition.
