PRINT BY: B Green AFTER/ARTIST: Anon PUBLISHER: ‘Noorthouck’s History of London’ DATE: 1772 METHOD: Line engraving with etching IMAGE SIZE: 9.00 inches by 15.75 inches print size
NOTES: A most interesting plate showing the former ten Bars or Gates of London - sorry if you thought these were going to be Pubs! The detailing all looks quite convincing.
We have: Newgate, Aldgate, Moorgate, Bishopgate, Cripplegate, Bridgegate, Temple Bar, Whitehall Gate, Ludgate and Aldersgate.
We think of all these that only Temple Bar still exists (but we might be wrong!) Temple Bar still stands, in the middle of a wood in Essex, but there are plans to return it and re-erect it in the City of London.
With a print like this, you could have hours of interest learning about and researching the history of the City of London.
CONDITION: Good, trimmed inside platemark and stuck down on a sheet of strong laid paper. Seems very stable, no foxing, so we say leave well alone. would frame up ideally.
