NOTES:   Mary Magdalene occupies an enigmatic position in the history of Christianity, and has been imaged many times over the years. Here, she rests perhaps during her vigil, by the light of an oil lamp, which it must be said bears a striking resemblance to a 18th Century teapot! A mezzotint by the leading engraver of the day, John Smith, showing the wonderfully subtle way in which mezzotint can depict artificial light.


CONDITION:     Fine impression, narrow margins, but with two sections of the margin missing top left and bottom left, the image area is unaffected.
