NOTES:     Madame La Barnne de Stael Holstein, an interesting contemporary print of the most famous European woman writer of the time. She was born in Paris, but to Swiss Protestant parents. As well as being the author of some of the earliest examples of the Romantic style of writing, she was also a leading intellectual of the day - and a leading opponent of Napoleon, who banned her from Paris in 1803. She led a colourful life.
