NOTES: The famous actress, Mrs Siddons, portrayed as Euphrasia in the play, ‘The Grecian Daughter’, a dramatic scene as Mrs Siddons wields the dagger. The well known Garrick Club collection of theatrical portraits contains no less than eight paintings and drawings of Mrs Siddons (see Ashton, ‘Pictures in the Garrick Club’, Garrick Club 1997). The print is particularly interesting as being by Caroline Watson (1760 -1814), acknowledged as the first professional British woman engraver, and appointed in 1785 as ‘Engraver to Queen Charlotte’. The play was first performed at Drury Lane in the 1782/83 season, so the painting and this print followed. A large print, with a dramatic lighting effect
CONDITION: A good impression, with some small tears in the margins and some minor surface abrasion.
