PRINT BY: (?) Smith AFTER/ARTIST: G Falda PUBLISHER: Laurie & Whittle, 53 Fleet Street, London DATE: 12th May 1794 METHOD: Line engraving with contemporary colour IMAGE SIZE: 260mm by 400mm to platemark
NOTES: View of the Quirinale Palace in Rome, with a large procession presumably the Pope approaching the entrance. This major building, commenced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1574 still stands, located on the highest of Rome’s seven hills. Many famous artists and architects such as Bernini contributed to its design and decoration. As seen today and as in this print, the building was completed in the 1730’s.
A very nicely coloured print, issued by Laurie & Whittle in the late C18. The printmaker is only identified as ‘Smith’, which is not very helpful - even in the C18, there must have been quite a few Smiths around! This print would make a very nice souvenir of a visit to Rome.
CONDITION: Good, with strong colour, believed all to be contemporary. The print has been professionally lightly cleaned and deacidified. It has good margins. There is a small tear bottom centre through the platemark and a piece missing top centre, well clear of the image, all repaired.
