PRINT BY: B A Dunker AFTER/ARTIST: Jakob Philipp Hackert (1737 - 1807) PUBLISHER: anon DATE: 1780 METHOD: Line engraving and etching IMAGE SIZE: 13.00 inches by 17.25 inches image area
NOTES: VUE D’UNE PARTIE DU CONVENT DE ST COSIMATO A beautiful composition, owing we suppose quite a lot to it being a stunning view anyway! The print shows the gorge beneath the Convent of San Cosimato.
This is just near the town of Vicovaro on the River Anio, in turn near Tivoli, in turn now just on the eastern outskirts of Rome. The remains of the aqueduct built by the Roman Emperor Claudius can be seen, with the Convent just showing on the top of the gorge to the left.
The Convent is now a Monastery of the Franciscan order, and we think you can even stay there, and can certainly visit, website Www.Sancosimato.Priminet.Com The painting was by Jacob or Johann Hackert, a superb draftsman who worked extensively in the Rome, Florence and Naples area of Italy in the late C18. A companion picture in this series showed the Convent from above, with the bridge in the gorge as a detail.
CONDITION: Good, a good strong image with good margins all round, a little grubby - gives it character. A tear top right just enters the print area, but has been skillfully repaired. other minor abrasions and folds, all outside the print area. This print would make a fine memento of a visit to the Tivoli area.
