NOTES:     A grand big print of this major Church, but we have to say straightaway not in the best of condition, see below. However, this is a print of one of the most important Churches in Wales,  especially known for its massive Tower. It is now called the Parish Church of St Giles, and is now in Wrexham County Borough.

It has considerable American interest, as the resting place if Elihu Yale, benefactor of Yale University. Indeed, apparently a replica of the Tower was built at Yale in the early C20. In the foreground of the print, there are lots of tombstones, but whether one of these is Mr Yale’s, we do not know!

The print is by John Boydell, the noted printmaker and publisher. The date is lost on the print, but Boydell is noted as having given up printmaking in 1767 to concentrate on publishing, so it can safely be attributed to the mid C18, and probably soon before the 1767 date, as Boydell is noted as the Publisher as well. It appears to have been published as a single print, as Thos Payne of Wrexham is described as the joint publisher, and the original price of One Shilling is printed on the print.

CONDITION:     Fair, the image area is in good condition and it is a good strong image. However, the print has lost its upper margin, although the edge can just be seen over a length of about 80mm. The other three margins are good at about 8 to 10 mm outside the platemark. Also, the inscription area has been folded, and some wording is difficult to read. The print has been professionally lightly cleaned, deacidified and the paper stabilised where necessary. We think framed up the print will look fine, but are selling this ‘as found’.
