PRINT BY: J D Harding (printed by Hullmandel) AFTER/ARTIST: John Buckler PUBLISHER: William Clarke, New Bond Street DATE: 1826 METHOD: Lithograph IMAGE SIZE: Both approx 280 mm by 460 mm image area
NOTES: A grand pair of prints of Eaton Hall in Cheshire, home of the Grosvenor family. But which Eaton Hall you ask?? We think that the Grosvenors are now on their fourth or fifth! This is the grand Gothic building, described in Terence Davis’s book, ‘The Gothick Taste’, as “the most remarkable Regency house in England and the interior was of a sumptuousness fitting its owner and knew no bounds in luxury and extravagance.” It was designed by William Porden for the Second Earl Grosvenor. Sadly, it’s all gone, but these prints give a good idea of the vast scale and rich architectural decoration of the building. The drawings are by the great John Buckler, in our view one of the most undervalued artists of the C19. His skill in perspective and detail is unsurpassed. These two prints are from ‘Views of Eaton Hall, Cheshire the Seat of the Right Honourable Earl Grosvenor’, published by William Clarke in 1826. Thus the prints are contemporary with completion of the Hall.
CONDITION: The images are on India paper and are very good crisp images. At some recent point, the India paper has been floated off the old backing and remounted on modern cartridge paper. This was probably done as the original backing had become too deteriorated. It has no affect on the appearance of the prints.
