PRINT BY: J Kip AFTER/ARTIST: J Kip PUBLISHER: Sir Robert Atkyns DATE: 1712 / 1768 METHOD: Line engraving IMAGE SIZE: 12.75 inches by 16.75 inches image area
NOTES: ‘Berkley Castle, the seat of the Earle of Berkley’, either from Kip’s ‘Britannia Illustrata’ or one of the fine prints from ‘The Ancient and Present State of Gloucestershire’, by Sir Robert Atkyns. This was one of the great County history books of the C18, which did so much to establish the antiquarian tradition. The book was first published in 1712, and reprinted in 1768 (Upcott). The print is on laid paper and believed contemporary, but there may well have been other print runs at the time. The castle still looks much the same today, apart from spelling the name with an extra ‘E’.
CONDITION: Good, but trimmed tight to the print area, with just a few millimetres margin. Original joined sheet down centre. From the rear, the print has some browning, but has been professionally cleaned and stabilised.
