A very grand watercolour of Grange in Borrowdale in the Lake District, England.  This is a big picture, very much in the manner of the exhibition watercolours which became common in the mid C19.

It is a very strong image, looking towards the village of Grange from the old road to the north east. The famous double bridge can be seen centre, and the very distinctive rock face which hangs over the village behind. To this day, the village is just a hamlet. In the foreground, some locals converse, one on horseback, the others in a pony and trap.

Great attention has been paid to the detail of the scenery, in particular the geology. The picture has an overall brown feel to it, but in view of this careful detailing, it seems to represent a faithful record of the appearance of the area at this date.

CONDITION   Good, the picture is stuck down on a backing board, probably the original, but seems stable. There is a very small amount of foxing near the top and a small scuff mark on the left.
