PRINT BY: Edward Orme? AFTER/ARTIST: Anon (Buck?) PUBLISHER: Edward Orme DATE: 1800 - 1810 METHOD: Aquatint IMAGE SIZE: 29.0cms by 41.5cms
NOTES: A charming and atmospheric print of this now ruined building, in in a very attractive frame. Acton Burnell Castle in Shropshire was always more of a ‘fortified house’ than a real castle, despite its early date of around c.1290. It was built - or rather fortified - by Robert Burnell, Bishop of Bath and Wells around this date, as Burnell was granted a “licence to crenellate” in 1284. It is one of the most important ruins in Shropshire, and is now looked after by English Heritage.
The aquatint with original colour but lightly faded has been trimmed to the margins of the print, but the name of the publisher, Edward Orme, can still be seen. Orme was a prolific publisher of prints in the early C19, and this print was no doubt from one of his many publications. We have no name for the artist, but actually the print seems to be a close copy of the much earlier Samuel and Nathaniel Buck view of Acton Burnell (first published c.1730).
Without the full inscription, we are sorry that we cannot identify the exact publication, but we seem to be in fairly good company, as the entry in The British Library catalogue is suitably vague as well! It lists this print, ‘View of Acton Burnel Castle, the Seat of Sir Edward Smythe’, with a date 1805, and another, ‘Acton Burnel Park’, but no other information.
Although trimmed, the combination of the soft colouring and old gold leafed frame makes a charming combination.
CONDITION: Good, plate trimmed to margins, some wormholes and two very small marks on the surface.
